Detroit is plagued by a series of murders of priests and nuns, with each victim found holding a black rosary. The police seem powerless to stop the serial killer and the Church can't protect its denizens, but when the progressive and charismatic Father Robert Koesler (Donald Sutherland) hears a confession from the murderer, he isn't sure what to do. Can he respect the Seal of Confession even if it means putting more lives, perhaps even his own, in jeopardy?

In Detroit, Michigan, a serial killer is murdering people connected to the Catholic Church, leaving black rosary beads in the hands of his victims. The first, Father James Lord, was killed on Ash Wednesday when his hospital respirator was unplugged. The second victim, a nun named Sister Ann Vania Peschal, was stabbed to death in a bathtub. The third victim, Father Donald Dailey, was shot in a confessional booth. Father Bob Koesler, who also serves as editor of the Detroit Catholic News, is frightened when the killer comes to his confessional booth and asserts that he blames the church for the death of his sixteen-year-old-daughter three years ago. After the killer leaves without harming him, Koesler asks fellow priest Father Edward Killeen, hypothetically, what he should do if he heard information during a confession that could save people’s lives.
